How long has this been going on? They are just now pulling them together. I have followed the movement on news sites as well as reddit...even the Pittsburgh movement since that is where I live.

Seems to me like you are comparing apples to oranges. Sure topography maps are awesome...but not really necessary for Google Maps. It would be a cool additional layer. The Topography lacks the resolution GMaps has it seems.
