The game gives you a setting to launch and play the game in Offline mode.  I am never playing online, so this argument against pause is moot.  This isn’t an Always Online game, as you can literally play it on a system without internet access.

That hallway actually was designed for the dogs to break through if you specifically enter from one of the doors, but not the other.  If you know and take some longer pathing to avoid going through it that particular way, you never have to deal with those particular dogs.
