I'm with you Dominican. Past midlife, but never owned anything but manual transmissions. Never had an SUV, and never had a minivan. Wife refuses to drive auto as well - says it contributes to complacency, numbness, and accidents.

GTI is an excellent car, but I think RWD cars are much more 'hoonable'.

I mostly agree with Andreesen. There is no reason for people to self-drive for utility in this day and age. Economics aside, the cons far outweigh the pros. Like the horse, driving should eventually evolve into a pleasure activity. I love driving, but there's nothing fun or liberating about negotiating traffic jams…
