It’s clear United is the villain. On that point, I’ve never been on a flight where, if the offer was high enough, someone wouldn’t take it - United didn’t offer enough. Not to quibble, but I’m pretty sure flying standby, as these employees were doing, doesn’t guarantee you a seat and I’ve never seen flight crew…

Just to make it clear. The aircraft was not “overbooked”. It only became overbooked when four additional United employees showed up late and demanded seats.

As the AF might say: It’s an awfully expensive way to deliver a 1,000 pound bomb (plus it’s actually less than 1,000 lbs).

On an unrelated note: I notice that “It’s legal” is commonly used by politicians to justify something they’re doing that’s extremely shady.
