The problem is in practice nobody does that. People who would split the lane are in their own world. There is no “collective thought” in a lane full of fitness strangers.

1) Lane choice seems to be limited when you show up during a swimming open session. The crowd tends to spread out regardless of their ability. Analogy, drive on the Jersey turnpike and see who goes in the passing lane. People who are passing?
I’m all for promoting the sport that I was part of for over 20 years as great exercise, but there needs to be a message about all of the subtle “rules” of lap swimming that beginners never know and greatly effect (towards the negative) the success of other people’s workouts.
