If you're running a PS3 on a firmware lower than 3.15 you can still have Linux. You'll never be able to use the PSN though.

You can still get the Net Yaroze kits on eBay for $300-400 while the PS2 linux kits are much less common and cost nearly the same.

Although I'm less irked by the PSN stories on Kotaku I do feel the sensationalism being uncannily strong for a site with this much popularity. Actually I'd argue there is no moral to the game's story. You can influence the game's ending. You decide which you value more: stimulation or predictability.
