It's the Whedonesque pre-load on tragedy. Ensure that the player understands that the stakes are real, and that their decisions will have consequence. Aside from the ridiculous end boss, ME2 was a finely crafted bit of fiction. I always made sure that Kelly survived however, because taking care of fish is hard.
