Most football programs are in the black, but overall all but 20 Div 1 FBS school's AD are in the red. Football subsidizes losses.

When you consider the additional revenue they bring in when they're successful such as increased donations and higher seat licenses to get season tickets due to increased demand, a lot of the top coaches are not paid even close to the revenue streams they drive.

The "greedy" schools that put the surpluses the Athletic Department makes back into the general scholarship fund? It's not like it's going to the President's Yacht fund. Not to mention only about 20 Athletic Programs make a profit anyways. Sure the revenues are high, but so are the costs.
