Worked there for 5 + years, its a joke and basically everything you wrote is correct. The failure rate is nothing new, its been known for years.

I have been a TSA officer for almost 8 years. I can think of a number of reasons for this failure rate.

I tend to seek out the higher quality item when buying things I want to last (even if they are quite a bit more expensive). Example: Red Oxx bags or SpyderCo knives. Beyond that, I try if at all possible to avoid buying things made in China. Not only because of the working conditions, but a thousand other things.
