I think what it boils down to, as others have suggested, that there is no distinction for the NEW self, as in a literally NEW self that perceives itself as you with all your memories and subjective experiences, etc., whereas the old one is literally destroyed down to an atomic level.

It wouldn’t matter to the “new” you, but it is a copy, whereas the subjective living, conscious experience of the “old” you is, quite literally, put to an end.

I don’t think this applies when there is ample opportunity to pass the car in front by the would-be-tailgater by simply going around the car in front (it is lazy not to just go around in this situation, although sometimes there isn’t a chance to pass, in which case I say definitely move over).
