I just got my new passport in Sweden a few weeks ago. The process was: book time online, go to the office (police office), wait ten minutes, show ID, take photo, give fingerprints, and say which office you want to pick it up at. Then go pick it up after you get a text.

As it turns out, being without a valid passport around the New York area as a Swedish national is easier! Since there are fewer people who are idiots while actually abroad, there’s hardly any line at all to get yourself a temporary passport.
