Earth rotates at over 1,000 mph. If it were to stop abruptly, the centrifugal force would cause wind around the globe to continue spinning at over 1,000 mph. Now imagine Mercury with it's hot and dead exterior. That's what earth would become due to the friction created by such a sudden stop. I'm frightened...
