I have a 2015 JGC and can see how this occurred. The shifter is easy to use but if you are not paying attention, you can most certainly put the car in reverse or neutral and not realize it.

The 16's have a better shifter. It’s still electronic, you’re not moving the linkage, but it’s way easier to use. It’s also basically the same design they had before the weird mushroom shifter. Imagine that.
