Many of the levels in Crysis 1 were like that. There were objectives, sure, but the majority of them were at the very beginning or end of the level, and everything else, with rare exception, was essentially “we’re dropping you in this huge playground, now mess stuff up, or whatever.” I’m not sure how the level designs…
