I think the film could have had it both ways. Vader is conflicted and wants Luke to come to the dark side. That’s still his son. Luke doesn’t go, Vader freaks (being that he is a psychotic, evil mass-murderer) and Luke has to kill him. He isn’t redeemed in his death, but Luke accepts that.
