Yeah you're probably right that Shutter Island's are far more trenchant. But the last couple of times for me watching The Departed there's definitely been a few "how can he, if that guy…?"/"if that's that, then who…?" moments.

I think the problem with Watchmen is the same as what is in retrospect wrong with his Dawn Of The Dead remake, which I actually happen to love (hated Watchmen though): Zack Snyder knows that stuff IS cool, but he doesn't understand WHY.
Also, make a graph of which the funniest shows on TV are right now, and which are the most successful ratings winners. You won't find much overlap.
