Tales of Cold Steel 1-2 is pretty much a silly paint-by-numbers shonen. And yet, its fantastic because it gets the character part so right.

The biggest offender to this kind of system are the Xeno games. Especially Xenoblade Chronicles X and XC2. That being said I think it works well for those 2 games. They are extremely long games w/ the 1st half being an emphasis on exploration and the 2nd half on combat.
