    I don't mind his voice, it's the melodies he chooses to sing I have problems with - I've always found them, and the way they mesh with the instrumentation… too cheesy?

    Huh. I was going to refute this with The Missing, but not only did that come out in 2003, it was directed by Ron Howard.
     Still: Princess Bride, Spinal Tap, Stand By Me - Hell, he gets a lifetime pass for Bride alone.

    I'd recommend Sean Stewart, but I'm not sure if that's actually YA. Specifically Galveston or Mockingbird; gorgeous books.

    Good thing I searched for Thompson's name before posting - he was the
    first person I thought of when I read the title for the article.
