The Mr. Norrell to your Dr. Strange

This is actually the part of the article that I found a bit confusing - everyone I know is waiting to have kids until their early to mid-thirties. My parents had me when they were in their mid-thirties. It feels natural and obvious to me that you’d potentially wait that long, and I just feel like there’s something

“Is the [originally well intentioned system which sort of implicitly involves a lot of money] being used to exploit [vulnerable population]?”

It’s so easy to find yourself putting up with abject craziness! The whole structure of academia is so faintly weird in the first place that I feel like it sort of subtly borks your “this is something I shouldn’t be subjected to” meter. It gets so much worse when there’s systematic support for abusive people.

Not THAT much more recent a phenomenon though.

This is actually a SUPER good point. At what stage do you have the right or even the obligation to start a fight that might torpedo the victim’s career, possibly without even impacting yours? Absolutely a conversation worth having.

Academia is ABSURDLY abusive. I’ve known professors who had made 90% of their graduate students, postdocs, and staff researchers cry at least once. I’ve known techs on fieldwork who were required to work with aeresolized carcinogens without respirators and sharply rebuked for reporting injuries that would lead to OSHA

Sometimes I feel like Jane is really just a mouthpiece for the All Party Committee to Combat Footling Social Misunderstandings.

Exact same boat. Last night I applied to a position that would mean leaving my hella cushy government service job for a limited term posting at a ~15% pay cut, and all I can think about this morning is how much I hope they contact me for an interview.

Yeah, solar is great but it’s not the magic bullet people sometimes like to pretend it is. Some combination of different technologies REALLY is the only serious way forward with renewable energy.

I don’t even LIKE hot sauce generally but Tabasco is stupid delicious.

Years ago I worked at a cafe and sometimes people would apologize for overcustomizing their orders. These were never the people who ACTUALLY overcustomized their orders. It was always some lady who had ordered like a decaf soy latte. If you’re asking for only two changes, both of which are ON THE MENU and take no

I want to open by saying that your response was so friendly and reassuring and just generally made me feel better about this process than basically anything else has.

When your product is information effective propaganda is just a question of putting together enough capital.

Of course the fundamental problem is that every group has an unshakably held equivalent to your last sentence, many of which are in diometric opposition to one another.

Pretty much how I feel about it too.

But at the same time industry is ALSO hella exploitative, especially at the bachelors level. There’s no fuckin’ winning!

Is that bit about publications true for the sciences too??

At this stage any documentary relating to the controversy over vaccines that fails to hammer home that...

I feel like there’s a really good joke where I pretend to think think you’re talking about “It’s Raining Men” out there somewhere but I just can’t quite find it.

Wow, taking a simply majority vote on whether or not SOME members of a group can participate in silent protest is super gross.
