Don’t ride in the door zone. I ride 5000 urban miles per year, for the last dozen years. Never been doored, no close calls even, because I’m not there.
Kinda difficult to worry about bike riders when they tend to disobey all the laws they are asked to do as well. You want to quote Chicago? I live here, and every day, I watch bikes fly through red lights, change lanes without signaling, turn without signaling, change from the sidewalk to the streets to the sidewalk.
Anyone that’s driving in Chicago and swings open their car doors is just asking for trouble. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been driving and have almost taken off someone’s door because they swung it open into my lane. Be very aware of your surroundings before you exit your car.
How about cyclists pay attention to what’s going on in front of them, and give cars that JUST PARKED RIGHT WITHIN THEIR FIELD OF VIEW a little more space, or even *gasp* slow down? I call it the “Dutch Reach Up Your Ass and Pull Your Head Out”.
