Seriously. I saw Shoot Em Up in a theater full of rowdy friends who had all snuck in copious amounts of booze, and I was still bored and annoyed by it. A harsh lesson in the limits of intentional camp.
You’re not wrong, but it’s a distinct improvement over the status quo ante, which was where every action movie was trying to be a joyless Taken retread.
There’s a small part of my brain that’s reminding me that Shoot ‘em Up’s trailer looked similarly fun and yet the movie itself wore out its one joke after about 15 minutes and somehow managed to waste the talents of Paul Giamatti, Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci...
Jesus, you weren’t kidding.
Yeah. Last summer was insane. Never seen or heard anything like it before in my life and frankly hope never to again. Wandering around between Sherman and Vermilyea on the night of the 4th was like Beirut in the 80s only everyone was happy: people kept just driving up and unloading entire cars full of more fireworks,…
Yeah, Bushwick in the early 90s was the only place in NYC where I ever felt straight up like simply being there, in broad daylight, was a fucking terrible idea that I could easily live (or not) to regret. I still remember going to a party at a friend’s apartment for halloween and going up on the roof to watch all of…
My favorite bit of trivia about that movie is that the script called for Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon’s characters to be revealed to be lovers midway through, but McNaughton decided -- sadly, probably correctly -- that there was no way he was gonna get away with that.
Good news: the fireworks season isn’t gonna be anywhere near as insane as last year. In 2020 there were multiple, months-long groupon deals on fireworks: basically every distributor was dumping their entire inventory at a massive loss because all of the civic fireworks shows were cancelled and as you might imagine…
I mean I won’t exactly claim that Denise Richards revealed that she was actually a good actress in that movie, but it certainly figured out how to use her effectively.
...and gets to talk in her natural voice register?
Now I’m wondering if we’ve passed each other at the C-Town or the Fine Fare. :)
It totally is, but I feel like the scale of it has changed a lot. In `95, you could buy an entire 2BR co-op in Inwood outright for $96k. Less, if you didn’t mind it being a walk-up. Nowadays, well, that might let you make the down payment...
It’s really amazing how the Heights and Inwood have changed over the last 20 years. When my wife moved there in 99 it felt like a fairly out-there decision; now it’s kinda like sesame street only with more drag racers. (Not really a fan of the drag racers, but you take the good with the bad.)
Counterpoint: Wild Things is awesome. That movie, like its lead character, was twenty times smarter than it let on, and it absolutely committed to the plan.
Just the trailer gave me whiplash. There’s something seriously surreal about seeing all of those locations from what is generally the Brigadoon of Manhattan up on the screen.
It’s a pity that the Night Court reboot got greenlit elsewhere, because no joke I think that the best way for Brooklyn 99 to handle the challenges of writing a funny cop show in a post-BLM world would have been to just... film a season of Night Court with the B99 cast. (If they really wanted to lean into it, put a…
No Jodie Whitaker though? I’d be really happy to see in, you know, something with a well-written script ever again in my life.
I don’t want to get my hopes up too much, but it sorta sounds like this might fill at least a tiny bit of the enormous Venture Bros-shaped hole in all of our hearts, at least until the movie happens?
If it gets a second season, I rate the odds of Mantzoukas getting at least a cameo role at 100%. His agent is probably kicking him or herself for not getting him in already.
