You touched on something that is super important and rarely talked about. Namely, don’t bother getting your PhD unless you’re going ivy league. That’s a shitty and cynical outlook, but it’s completely accurate. The people who manage to get those rare tenure-track jobs tend to be from Princeton, Yale, Stanford, et al.

Great article! I’m so glad this issue is getting some well-deserved publicity. Sadly, I think every university has the story of the adjunct sleeping in their car (just like every PhD program has the myth of the 15 year doctoral student; sort of a take on the Phantom of the Opera). Once upon a time, my course in life

Oh, give them a break. Haven’t you ever been in the awkward position of getting into a fight on the drive over to your parents’ house for Sunday dinner, where you’re both tense but trying not to air your dirty laundry? But, of course, everyone picks up on it and you just have to smile through your teeth and act like

Oh, no you didn’t!

My favorite book of short stories is Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger. I’ve had the same tattered pocketbook version since 1998. It’s my go-to book anytime I’m feeling sad or homesick. I’ll never forget buying the book and sitting down to read the opening story, “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” and being brought to tears

This is awful...but I’m cracking up so hard at my desk right now.

What about Blumhouse’s Inflatable Guy?

Nickelodeon should bring back Amanda Bynes and see what happens.

I think everyone planning on seeing this should instead go see Booksmart. It’s currently getting short shrift by being played in few theaters with limited showtimes. Not because it isn’t very good, of course, but because it’s a - gasp- original idea with no built-in audience.

Of course this comes immediately after I cancel my Netflix subscription.

$23 for a double album, maybe. But I distinctly remember CDs across the board being $17.99. Then I discovered used CDs, which changed everything.

Did you guys know that Betsy Devos is an anagram for Delores Umbridge?

I’m definitely looking forward to all the sweet CGI gore! I also can’t wait to see how convoluted the formerly-straightforward story becomes, as the producers bend over backward dumping exposition that explains who the cenobites are, where they came from, their motivation, and all the other terrifying information that

In high school I was reading Fight Club at lunch when this girl came up and, though I was clearly only about halfway through the book, said, “Cool, you’re reading Fight Club. Isn’t it crazy that the narrator and Tyler turn out to be the same person?” I’ve never been a stickler for spoilers, so I wasn’t all that upset

Here, here!

Sanders is totally that poli sci professor you have that is really intelligent but also kind of out there, whose rants on Nixon and the awesomeness of the 60's you humor, and maybe even egg on, because you know he’ll remember it when deciding what your final grade will be.

This is my new favorite thing EVER.

Not sure if this is exactly what you meant, but I can’t eat edibles because the taste of cannabis gets my gag reflex going. Which is strange since I’ve always enjoyed the smell of marijuana smoke.

I may be focusing on the wrong thing, but who lets people have sex in their house? Like, “You’re looking for a place to fuck? Hmm. Go ahead and use the bed in the library. But careful not to fall into the secret hot tub!”

“On your feet, soldier! On. your. FEEEEET!”
