I don't think the problem here entirely lies with EA being full of shit and not doing their job, it probably has more to do with them being overly ambitious. The first time I played FF7 I was able (don't ask me how it was like 15 yrs ago) to beat Emerald Weapon on about level 67. It sounds crazy but it was and still is the shining achievement of my jrpg tenure. It took me something like 2 1/2 to 3 hours of just surviving before he went down.
