I just went from a 2006 Mazda3 hatch to a Golf.  The Golf seems to have more room in the back than my Mazda did.  I can fit my daughter’s rear-facing car seat in behind the driver’s seat without any adjustment and I am 6'2".  I have never tried it with the car seat base though.  I imagine that would require a bit more…
