I see what you’re saying. Perhaps for me the Josh Mostel version is so ingrained in me that I seek out the tiny inflections he added to the vocals and I can’t help it. Just the first few lines, there’s a tune there, and AC’s didn’t have it.

I don’t disagree. Similarly I can’t really think of any modern rock or pop stars with the range for Jesus off the top of my head, so I never minded Legend’s casting or his performance overall.

Thank you for being the only critic of Alice Cooper as Herod so far that I’ve seen. It didn’t help that he had almost no choreography, and spoke nearly all his lines instead of actually singing them. A few years ago there were Girl Scouts set up in the parking lot of a Phish show I went to in upstate New York. I thought they were geniuses. I don’t even smoke, but I bought a box.
