Despite his twitter tirades, if you watch any in depth interview or Q&A of him, it’s fairly obvious that he knows about the subject matter in depth and is not one of those typical hands-off CEOs.
He may not be a “genius,” and he is likely some sort of manic depressive, but he’s single-handedly changed both the auto industry and the space launch industry. So, maybe he’s not a genius, but his companies have accomplished meaningfully more than the bottom 1/3 of the Dow companies over the last 20 years.
