Are we going to do Trick-or-Treating in this plague year? I’m not sure opening my door to a bunch of strangers is the best idea in “these uncertain times”.

We have back to school candy that’s just Halloween candy without the witch on the boxes in Canada too. Sometimes there’s the Halloween branding and I don’t think anyone cares. Just like Christmas in October and I swear this year I saw an Easter Egg display in January.
Is this a US vs Canada thing? Our Halloween candy is just the normal candy in fun size, and maybe the Reese’s have a pumpkin shape. Honestly, not loving any of the candies in the article. Why green? It’s so off-putting. Wrong-coloured dairy freaks me out. I remember seeing ads for strawberry milk as a child and no, I…
Yeah, there isn’t going to be any trick-or-treating this year...maybe 2021?
No. No no no. When I’m Emperor (any day now) the following will be punishable by death:
It’s quite impressive (ie depressing) that this makes no mention of the fact that it’s based on a short story by Simon Rich (Man Seeking Woman, Miracle Workers), I expect so little from the AV Club these days but it still manages to disappoint!
You know what’s amazing? The Alison Roman chocolate chip shortbread, with crushed salt and vinegar added.
Might be good in a chex mix, but I sure as hell wouldn’t eat it in milk.
Clearly a savoury cereal, meant to be eaten like a cracker. Or a crouton. Or crushed up as breading. Or a breadcrumb. Makes sense.
Surely I can’t be the only one who thinks that scrubbing things clean and pretending no blackface ever happened is worse than acknowledging how culture has changed by putting a warning before the episode.
Switching Chang’s makeup to blue actually seems like a doable CGI solution to this. Even the hate crime line would still kind of work as a stupefied reaction, but there wouldn’t be any blackface.
I am impressed Robert Downey Jr has not had articles regarding his Tropic Thunder character! (yet). It was offensive cause that was clear cut black face, but his character (not his depiction of the black person) was ultimately the butt of the joke if I recall correctly.
I’ve seen Community fans really upset about this (what a surprise, another Harmon show with almost toxic fanatics) when to be very blunt the “joke” adds absolutely nothing to the episode. His use of blackface is only referenced for one bit of shock value and the rest of Chang’s contribution to the episode makes…
My first instinct, as a white dude, is to defend these specific episodes and incidents as well, and point out how they’re actually lampooning blackface, etc. But the fact of the matter is that blackface jokes, even if they’re making fun of blackface or come at the expense of obviously racist characters, still…
Most of the examples of blackface being removed are either 100% harmless or are actually a commentary on racial dynamics and the stupidity of blackface. God this push this week to remove these particular episodes are dumb as fuck.
“Colorblind hiring” doesn’t work. Because none of us are actually colorblind and we can’t just shut off the part of our brain that sees differences in people.
You gotta remember - to the white people who are focusing their attention on this, rather than systemic police violence, all Latinos are exactly the same!
Survivor has always leaned heavily on stereotypes for producers and encouraged people to play up “roles” but it’s one thing to be the nerdy pale white guy and another thing to be the angry Black woman.
Imagine thinking there’s only one Jewish black actress out there. There’s even more than one famous Jewish black actress.
why not just hire more voice actors (writers etc) of colour?
