Yeah, I already posted that it felt like midseason Breaking Bad, which is awesome and all, but the fact that it was so close tonally made it all the more noticeable that it lacked the kind of punch that its parent show had when it came to season premieres.
The fortuitousness of Raymond Cruz being too busy to commit cannot be underestimated - no Gus if it weren't for that. Gus elevated the show SO MUCH. It's probably one of the best examples of things not going as planned working for the best. Same with the Mike/Saul situation for that matter.
