Some people simply enjoying the manual driving experience.
Nobody "dislikes" the ZF 8HP. It is certainly leaps and bounds better than the 6L90E that GM has put in everything for the last 7 years. It's a good automatic. However, that is not the point.
Because to a lot of enthusiasts there is great satisfaction in rowing your own gears.
three pedals are more fun. It's as simple as that.

That's the 2005-2006 facelift with front air dam and chubbier rear bumper. You can also get that grille on the aftermarket, though personally I think it looks like it's vomiting chain mail.
At this point I am at a loss on coming up with another car that accomplishes that much at that price.
As an avowed Tesla fan, someone tell me why this isn't more of a competitor for the E class instead of the S class, in which case it really isn't that great a value.
