@symbology: I don't think this site ever advocated for leaving your network wide open. They had an article on good etiquette when you have house guests, which included providing them with your network name and password, but I have never see anything here suggesting you leave your home network wide open to everyone.

@bustedchain: Yeah, OS X is amazingly lax about this sort of thing, as a default, it'll autoconnect to a network it has connected to in the past if your network is down for some reason. You actually have to turn on a preference to have it prompt you.
