"They are making shit up as they go along" is the accurate answer to all of these questions. And I actually wouldn't have any problem with the show if they were open about that aspect of their writing process.

Or you know, they make it up as they go along and Jay being Zoom wasn't in the cards all along. If it were, they would have spent more time developing his storyline instead of wasting 10 episodes on that weird Barry and Patty relationship that went absolutely no where.

People need to stop romanticizing the first season of this show. While it debuted surprising well, it also lost a great chunk of its audience in that very season (I follow ratings as a semi-hobby).
