I think overall her story is meant to be that she had a lot of potential to get out. She was smart and could have gotten athletic scholarships which would have given her a bright future. But her circumstances changed that for her.

It totally happens. It's too bad private school parents would never allow it because doing the reverse would actually serve a purpose. There are private schools that take in scholarship/charity students, they often have a hard time because they don't have the things their fellow students do.
