well he is obviously not completely useless. He surprised Kara when he attacked her at the DEO as she was not expecting anything like that to happen. Later, she puts in some good 3-4 punches to knock him out.

the first time I realised James was not in the episode was when I was reading this review. I feel sad now coz I really do like him. Hope the direction they are giving the character is the right one.
