I felt it was Claire hurting the nanny also. You see Claire putting the kettle on, the nanny's fearful response to the whistling sound, then her putting ice on her burn't arm.

I got the impression that she stole the money for drugs? There was no indication that their was any sexual harassment/pregnancy. The farm job is probably the only thing she can get because of her sister's connection to the family.
