I can't make sense of your logic in thinking the person who wasn't in on the cheating knows what was going on better than the people who were doing the alleged cheating.

Don't agree with your characterization. The biggest problem seems to be the reached adulthood when everyone who disagrees with a person just gets written off as a de facto snarling villain—unfortunately, vast portions of our populace have succumbed to that delusion.
