Besides, with all the use of hyperspace and FTL travel, even people born on the same planet at the same time might be different ages due to relativity.

This was also a movie about kids dealing with divorce and missing a father figure. Spielberg was a child of divorce so it was personal for him.

Any movie becomes terrible when repeated enough times, but that isn't a bad movie to be stuck with.
