How do you even measure age in space? If I'm on a planet that has a 21 (Earth) hour day but a 300 (Earth) year year, how old am I? What is a frame of reference? Besides, with all the use of hyperspace and FTL travel, even people born on the same planet at the same time might be different ages due to relativity.

This was also a movie about kids dealing with divorce and missing a father figure. Spielberg was a child of divorce so it was personal for him.
Any movie becomes terrible when repeated enough times, but that isn't a bad movie to be stuck with.
