I can think of a few moments, a couple from this season spring readily to mind, but they seem more like moments you wouldn't wish on anyone. They don't make Hannah more likable, but they do make the other people involved look like even worse assholes than they already were.
I have to wonder how much they were counting on viewer overlap of Scandal and Girls when casting Diaz in that role, as a means of generating viewer anxiety for a scene that wasn't able to provide enough anxiety on its own. I don't watch Scandal, so I didn't have a visceral reaction to Diaz and Dunham sitting together.…
I definitely had that impression while watching the show, but then I remembered that Laird is a recovering addict. It's possible he went for a walk by himself, is attending a meeting, or meeting with a sponsor, but it's also possible that Caroline's abandonment and the fear/pressure/burden of raising Sample alone…
We have been told why Ice Nation under the Ice Queen is a threat, but the show has been less clear about the threat Ice Nation poses under new leadership. We've only seen the new king briefly since the death of the Ice Queen and he hasn't given much indication of his plans. It's not entirely clear what Ontari's game…
I think Ontari as a character is fine for now with potential to be great. I don't think that the show has done a good enough job showing us why she is a major threat to Sky Crew though and that is a real problem. A huge part of that work would be showing us why the Ice Nation in particular is the enemy. We've heard…
They need to show us what happened after Farm Station landed. Showing us the brutality of the Ice Nation would go a long way in understanding Pike's motivations and why so many people, including Monty's mom, were willing to go along with him. It would also help us to understand the internal political conflicts we've…
The abuse got buried. He was famous enough, rich enough, and charismatic enough (I refuse to use the term likable to describe an abuser) to get away with it with minimal legal consequences. And he took no hits to his public image from the media for it.
I wouldn't say huge, but he was well known in certain circles. If you followed football, you knew OJ from his time as a player (both with the NFL and USC, with USC honestly being more significant to LA folks) and later as a commentator. If you liked Leslie Nielsen, you knew him as Nordberg from the Naked Gun movies.…
That's awful. You came into the show right as folks should have been leaving it. I mean, SoA goes to Ireland…worst trip ever, for them and for us as viewers.
I agree. That moment and the plea she makes to Philip to posthumously take the blame for whatever happens to Pastor Tim and his wife, should the need arise, were really lovely character moments. Those moments showed Elizabeth as more complex than she is often given credit for. I know Elizabeth has earned her label as…
I started what is yours is not yours, Helen Oyeyemi's recently released short story collection. So far, it's better than Boy, Snow, Bird, which in my view did not merit the hype it got.
While Maura might be liberal (unclear since her politics have not been made explicit), she would likely be more comfortable with Caitlin, at least initially, than with non-white members of the trans population who differ from Maura in numerous ways (race, socioeconomic status, education, religion, etc.). Season 2…
Further proof of just how bad she is at vampire hunting?
I agree. Poor writing and execution have proven fatal for this season. The flash forwards killed any dramatic tension there might have been for events taking place in the "present" and it's clear that the writers don't have a real handle on any of the major story lines dominating this mess of a season. Attempts at…
Other networks like Lexa and Lincoln too (well, the actors anyway)… It's tough to lose favorites. I loved those characters too.
It's interesting you interpreted that moment as the death of Octavia. I saw it as the moment Octavia realized that merely stopping Pike was not going to be enough. Pike has to die. And Octavia is going make damn sure she's the one to kill him, further reinforcing her self-identification as a Grounder.
Those scenes establish that Cochran is her boss and mentor. While her role is not as prominent as nearly all of the other attorneys on the defense team (the series doesn't clarify whether the other associate is senior to her, although you could interpret him falling on his sword as to the discovery issue as evidence…
I read Toobin's book on the OJ case and Bats of the Republic. Toobin's book was great for delving deeper into the issues that arise on American Crime Story. Bats is a beautifully designed book with a fun, but not particularly great story. Moving on to American Gods this week.
Using the one woman on the defense team that way was the one sour note for me in an otherwise wonderful episode. The tears were a cheap move on the part of the writers and rang false to me, especially since the decision wasn't fatal to the defense. It's especially disappointing because the show has been great up to…
