I don't question his acting ability, he's tremendously talented. But there's just not much that can be done about how little he fits my mental image of Roland. Or the painted images of Roland from the illustrated interiors.

I don't think it'd fix the problem, but it's a good first step.
Stephen King has made way too many mystifying choices when it comes to films for me to care all that much about his feelings on any given adaptation.
"Elba and McConaughey seem perfectly cast"- really? I mean, I like Elba, but when I think "guy who looks like a mix of Clint Eastwood and Stephen King" I don't think "go get Idris Elba". Even ignoring the race thing, he's just huge, whereas Roland seemed more wiry. Roland looks like the archetypal cowboy, Idris Elba…
And that he looks absolutely nothing like I expected. Way more hair.
What other brilliant articles can the AV Club give us? "Anthony Hopkins established that he was a great actor long before Westworld"? Everyone knows this.
I'd have it playing every time I entered a room.
I think any explanation that tries to go from "all his highest ranking employees are women" to misogyny is going to be a bit of a stretch. And sure, he's controlling. He's a eugenicist. But we haven't seen any indication that he'd be less controlling with a male employee.
Was the manservant even at the dinner itself? I can't remember. And beard-guy really does not seem like the sort of guy who would care how she dresses.
Landa and the surviving Basterds seem to agree that the deal is real. Given that the US really was willing to turn a blind eye to Nazis if it was convenient, I see no indication that they were about to just say "whoops, we were pretending".
Didn't we already see him working with the singer last week?
Sure, it's part of the genre. That doesn't make, say, Saving Private Ryan a movie with a happy ending.
What's the real-life breakdown of gender distribution in murderous thugs? Tulip is exceptional, but in general there's a reason you don't see a lot of coed contact sports.
"They should just send deaf dudes after him."
Yeah, the guy he hires to be good at beating people up looks like he's good at beating people up. So? It's like being bothered that the getaway car has all its tires.
I thought it was either melted butter or some kind of soup.
Is he? I know he said he loved Sheriff Truman, but that seemed like more of a general love than a romantic one. And he did seem to be ogling Tammy a few episodes back.
Huh, I thought he was just responding to her red, white, and blue outfit.
Lynch just has so many bizarre performances that it's really difficult to say if an actor's doing a bad job, or just being told to do something strange. Like the woman who yelled at Truman at the station, or Wally Brando.
A good chunk of the heroes die, and while Hans Landa does get a swastika carved into his forehead he still gets immunity in the US. So it's at best bittersweet.
