I actually said "Aw, fuck!" out loud when I read this news. About a 92 year old's passing! He was pretty damn amazing. I got to see him in '06. Anoushka played with him. I felt damn lucky at the time, and much more so now.

Don't be! Their Christmas specials are perennials for good reason. Santa Claus is Coming to Town is so good it could be the definitive "biography" of St. Nick; and for a couple generations of kids, it pretty much is.

God, Miracle Mile. I saw that in '89 or '90, and it made a hell of an impression. It went there, you know? The ending. I love the way it was directed, and can't believe Steve De Jarnatt stopped making movies. It's a right shame.

I saw Brief Encounter for the first time. It's my first non-epic David Lean, and one thing it did was increase my interest in seeing his earlier films even more than I already had. Wonderfully shot. Well written and acted. Glad I finally saw it. Something else it did, which I wasn't expecting even though I knew…

Same here. I read it to my daughter last year, when she was five. I did my best to, not Bowdlerize it, but somewhat tone that part down with a couple of synonyms.

I have a cd of just Brubeck and Paul Desmond - 1975: The Duets. It's quite nice. Also can recommend Brubeck Time, from 1955. It's got Paul Desmond, but with a different rhythm section than on Time Out. Also great.

"Do you have a steady boyfriend
Cos' honey I've been watching you
I hear you're mad about Brubeck
I like your eyes, I like him too
He's an artist, a pioneer
We've got to have some music
on the New Frontier"

Monkey Business and Horse Feathers are great. Don't listen to the daffy one. You should definitely start with Opera and Soup (both are indispensable), then, in no particular order, Business and Feathers, Day at the Races and Animal Crackers. The Cocoanuts and Go West are the last, and least, worthy ones. Skip At…
