Actually WSM is a surprisingly fine writer, and a lot of his stuff is still extremely readable, ageing much better than many other works published in that period and dealing with that sort of post-colonialist milieu.

The restaurant scene with Striesand and Kristofferson in that film is quite amazing in how bad the continuity is, with cutlery switching hands, food appearing and disappearing on forks, Kristofferson's tie being done or undone, wine glasses moving and having different levels of liquid, all changing from cut to cut.…
