People are passionate about voting against Trump too. Just to pick one example, millions of recent immigrants have registered to vote for first time to vote against him. If hardcore racists can sway election singlehandedly, why we have black president for past 8 years? GOP's big problem is that there not enough white racists to win election. Trump is doubling down on their most rabid supporters, but alienating decent people in doing so.

He's been slowly gaining because very candidate gets boost in polls during convention. He still behind by about 50 electoral votes, and Clinton about to get her convention bounce. And all those swing states you mentioned? Clinton has lots of people on ground and lots of money to spend; Trump has neither.
