I worked in animation in Canada for years. I don't know anyone who worked at this particular studio but it's not a surprise that people were expected to work a lot of overtime on contract and no one got paid for it. Animated productions are highly subsidized by the provinces to boot under film and tax credits.
And really, it's just about money and nothing else, just like any other commodity. It pays off financially to make women feel insecure if they aren't buying expensive items for the wedding. To do something you love, you need to embrace the aspects of it you don't necessarily love. It's the price you pay. Every job has its pluses and minuses for what you want. if you want to make a lot of money there are certain jobs geared at for that. If you want long term sustainability theres other jobs for that too.
