It really did die overnight. I remember our local rock station in Batlimore went from proudly playing Def Leppard and Kix (the Baltimore Beatles!) to a format change to alt-rock. Hammerjacks, the big hair metal club, closed down. It happened, literally, in the span of one school year. It was amazing.

On that, we completely agree.

The Battle of New Orleans came after time had expired, and its points were deducted from our final score.

Well, we lost the War of 1812 when they burned down the White House, but that's neither here nor there.

No, stats lie. Here's an example: in a baseball boxscore, a player will have, let's say, two at bats. You assume that means he was "at bat" twice. But it turns out he drew a walk and laid down a sacrifice (and not all boxscores include this information), which means he actually came to the plate four times. The term

It's happening right now. The British press is extremely partisan. The Guardian is the Labor paper and the Times of London is the Tory paper (The Sun is the wingnut paper, and the BBC is the "establishment" media which comes closest to objectivity). British journalism has been able to thrive even with a partisan

My ex-wife and I danced to "Moondance" at our wedding. But screw her, she's not allowed to ruin Van Morrison for me.

Really enjoyed the first half of the doc, but it fell apart in the second as it focused on Fetisov going to the pros. It just didn't feel like it fit in the narrative of the film. Also, it has the weakness of silencing Boris Mikhailov, who was the single greatest thing about the doc. He was cranky, arrogant, and

Gone with the Wind is Birth of a Nation that's now smart enough to smuggle its vile racism beneath a veneer of respectability. It is a far more insidious picture. Birth of a Nation's racism is so open and noxious, that you can't help but recoil. GWTW suckers in new souls into the Lost Cause every time it airs on TV,

I think the major difference between the Stones and Zep is that the Stones were originally a blues cover band and later progressed to original compositions. They never passed off blues artists' work as their own, and then they took those building blocks into the songs they would eventually write.

The AV Club

There's nothing comic book fans love more than complaining about Marvel and DC's continuity. But yeah… Battleworld sounds pretty dumb. I'm sure we're only a year away from Marvel pretending it never happened.

I like the cut of your jib.

I will see them in two different cities on consecutive nights because… well, S-K is awesome. This is truly a review proof album for me. Though I find it a bit sad that a bunch of fortysomethings can rock so much harder than almost every other current band. I'm tired of every indie rock band being so damn restrained.

I once broke up with a girl who claimed to like westerns but then couldn't even sit through Once Upon a Time in the West.

For a bunch of fans who defend a band on the grounds of how fun they are, they sure do hate the band's most fun record (Diver Down). Van Halen fans are weird.

Beat me to it. Everyone was ripping off Johnny Thunders. I'm not a huge fan of the Dolls, mainly because of how terrible music was during the height of hair metal. Yes, I blame them. I try not to, but I think people forget how inescapable those horrid bands were in the late 80s. It scarred me for life.

My real problem is that the R&RHOF is a museum to pop music that does a terrible job of telling the story post-1975. It bears no resemblance to the music I grew up listening to (I'll just assume they get the Boomer era right). I could make a more diverse ballot that tells a more interesting story by nominating two

The surviving members of the Minutemen, to name two. CCR was awesome, and Fortunate Son is the greatest rock n roll song ever recorded.

I think my definition of "substantially contradicts" is different than Nye's. Compressing nine days into one doesn't seem like all that big of a deal in a narrative. It's not like evidence pointed to a different guy.
