Working at small, community newspapers through most of my career (before I joined the Dark Side and went to work in PR), I covered more than a few lunchtime civic club (Rotary, Lion and Chamber of Commerce, etc) meetings.

I tried some different groups through meetup and generally enjoyed them all (hiking, wine, camping) but I know what you mean, it can be a mixed bag participant-wise in age and life experiences. But sometimes that was the fun of it.
