I always have to remember that characters can make a choice that I logically wouldn't and as long as it fits with a trait they have, then it's in character. Keep in mind it's a tv show that from a writer's perspective needs to happen quickly. They probably approach the situation like "Donnie and Alison need to learn about brightborn… How?" And then come up with a way that fits their world (a friend) and so on…
