I'd go back even further. Season 2 clearly suffered from "create a bunch more characters with backstories so we can pad time moving the plot forward" and season 3 is now legendary as the "we have no idea how long we'll be doing this so leeeet's … stick our main characters in a polar bear cage."
Not sure if anything can beat season 1 for me. Before Breaking Bad I would have said the best serialized season of a TV show ever …
