the writers had planned a full arc for him this season, but it was among the other things that had to be truncated this season, which is why some other characters haven't shown back up.

Root's character was on this path from the first episode she appeared in. It was the only way for her character arc to end. Comparing this to The 100 is beyond silly.
This was a fantastic episode of television, and nearly everything I've read about it (except on Tumblr) has understood the difference between this death and the death on The 100, which it is being compared to a lot.
