I don't think that the fact that the first truly jaw-dropping episode of the show also happens to have the first two significant deaths is a coincidence.
Spartacus was absurdly good at character deaths. If any show was better at it I haven't seen it yet.

The "Marty watches tape" scene was firmly in Nic Cage territory, and was the nadir of a performance I found pretty distracting, while the "Sam Healy watches tape" one ended with that rubbish scream, which struck me as not the way people react to disturbing footage.
