I think streaming services can afford to take chances on content that doesn't appeal to a broad base because they can lure people in and keep them. I think once people have Netflix they stay, so Netflix can create an LGBT show that draws in another half million people who really want that show then they stick around.

He hated the Shining because it is a completely different vision of the characters/motivations/story from what he wrote. To say he has no taste because he didn't like a version of what many consider to be his best novel veering so far from the source material as to be barely recognizable is… something.

I think you can start with book 2. There is no real way to make the primary story a standalone, but book 2 is part of the heart and soul of the series. the key elements of the first book could be told in flashback or through the tv series medium if they still go that route.
