The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey is one I really enjoy.

Shards of Honor is the first book chronologically. It stars the parents of the main character of the series.
The Warrior's Apprentice is the first book to star Miles the aforementioned protagonist.
Falling Free is technically first, but it is set 200 years before Shards of Honor.

A Civil Campaign slightly stands out over everything else, but the best part of the series is how consistently great it is. Captain Vorpatril's Alliance is also a lot of fun.
